Obituary:
Harpswell— Cmdr. Frederick O. Dammann, age 76, died in his home Tuesday June 22, 2010, after fighting a long battle with colon cancer. He was born in Chicago, IL June 24, 1933 the son of Frederick M. and Geraldine L. Henrich. He grew up in Ottawa , IL . Following high school he attended the University of Illinois, studying Pre-Mechanical Engineering. In 1953 Fred left the University to attend the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. He graduated from the Academy in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in General Engineering and Naval Science. He married Carolyn Webb June 15, 1957. Fred and Carolyn had one son, Frederick Karl Dammann, who was laid to rest in 1983. Carolyn passed away August 11, 2006. He was also pre-deceased by a half-sister. Mr. Dammann found happiness again and married Luella Rock in their Harpswell home on May 3, 2009. Mr. Dammann completed 20 years of active duty as an Officer in the United States Navy. He was designated as a Naval Aviator and piloted the PBY Seaplane and P3 Orian (sub-chaser); in addition he provided expertise to first deployed LAMPS helicopter detachment and USS BELKNAP. In 1971, Fred was stationed at the Brunswick, ME Naval Air Station, where he retired from his Naval career in 1977. Fred went on to receive his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Maine. Fred possessed an exceptional knowledge of computer systems and has developed several computer systems and associated software both for the U.S Navy and civilian organizations. During his service at the B.N.A.S. he served as Tactical Coordinator in P3 Aircraft. He also revitalized the Air Station Word Processing Group and was able to double production in a two month period. He was also responsible for computerizing the operations of J. Weston Walch, Pulishers, where he was business manager. More recently he served as a member of the faculty of the Aurora University School of Business. Early on in his association with Aurora University, Professor Dammann was instrumental in establishing the Novell Computer Network. During his time at Aurora University he served as Chair of Information Science and Operations Research, as well as Director of the Graduate Business Program. During and interim period, Professor Dammann also served as Acting Dean. He was loyal and dedicated and particularly helpful in recruiting and counseling students. Fred was very proud of his German heritage and received a commendation during his Navy service for his fluency in the German language. He was also awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for Tactical development as an Aircrew Member. For his own recreation, Fred piloted his personal aircraft and continued to enjoy sailing on the ocean. Fred was well respected by his colleagues and admired by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He loved his family and enjoyed outings with his wife, grandchildren, and beloved pet Annie. Fred was excitedly awaiting the arrival of his fourth grandchild due in January. Fred is survived by his wife Luella of Harpswell; a nephew, Patrick Russell and his life partner Katherine of California; two step daughters, Shannon Spaulding and her husband Steve of New Gloucester, Jamie L. Blow and her husband Jamie of Brunswick; three step grandchildren Savannah, Brianna, and Wyatt Spaulding all of New Gloucester. There will be a memorial gathering held on July 11, 2010, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm at The American Legion Post 21 in Bath. Inurnment will take place in the US Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis,MD later this fall.
