Sarah V. Gallagher, a resident of Brunswick, died on May 27. She moved to Maine in 1988 after a career as a college professor in New York State, and worked with more than sixty nonprofit organizations across Maine, raising money for museums, arts organizations, historic preservation, and many other projects.
She first began work at Bowdoin College in the Office of Development, raising funds for capital projects and programs. She also worked as Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at the Portland Museum of Art. Her career as a consultant included a wide variety of projects. She helped to organize the Maine Art Museum Trail, a collaborative of Maine’s seven leading art museums, founded in 1994 to promote public knowledge and access to art. She also worked with curators David Becker and Bruce Brown and over twenty art galleries and museums to organize the Maine Print Project, a statewide celebration of Maine printmaking. She also enjoyed working with historic preservation projects, including the Ruggles House in Columbia Falls, the Victoria Mansion in Portland, the Portland City Hall Clock Tower restoration, and Liberty Hall in Machiasport.
She is survived by her husband, Cornelius A. (Neil) Gallagher, and three brothers, J. Stephen Van Sickle of Troy, New York, Howard F. Van Sickle of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Robert David Van Sickle of Dalzell, South Carolina, and by a niece and four nephews.
A gathering to remember Sarah Gallagher will be held at the Cumberland Club, 116 High Street, Portland, on July 17 at 3:00 PM.
