Brunswick—Richard “The General” Wellington Grant, age 73, died at his home, Wednesday May 19, 2010.
He was born in Skowhegan, ME June 28, 1936 a son of Furney Wellington Gladstone Grant and Gladys J. McDaniel.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Brunswick since 1982 and served on its Board of Trustees. He worked at Brunswick Apartments and most recently for Bath Iron Works. Having been known by many as “The General” while at BIW, he retired in 1998 after 33 years. In 1979, he received his High School Diploma Equivalency from Morse High School at the age of 42.
He enjoyed visiting and outings with his family and friends, whom he loved to share his wonderful sense of humor and laughter. He enjoyed jazz, especially Dixie Land and the music of Benny Goodman and Glen Miller. He possessed a wealth of information about antique cars and a myriad of other subjects which he pleasured in speaking at length to those who would listen. In like kind, at all holiday dinners he insisted on saying grace, which could become quite lengthy.
Richard was predeceased by his brother, Maurice Grant, half brother Reginald Thompson, his sisters Joyce Huffman, Doris Davis, and June Berry.
He is survived by a sister Caroline Schreiter and her husband Roland of Old Town; four nephews, Roland Davis and Freddie Davis both of Richmond, Clifford Berry and his wife Susan of Oklahoma, Roland Schreiter of Old Town; three nieces, Bonnie McGowen and her husband Bruce of Topsham, Deborah Huston and her husband John of Bowdoinham, Lori Sawyer and husband James of Freeport; great nephews, Travis Beaudoin of Freeport, Tyson Beaudoin of Bath, John Bamford of Bowdoin, Jeremy Huston of Windham; great nieces, Catina Reed of Pennsylvania, Shelby Sawyer of Freeport, Coty Berry of Oklahoma; a brother-in-law Fred Davis of Richmond ;many great-great nieces, nephews, and cousins.
