Harpswell- Douglas Leland, age 56, died Thursday, April 22, 2010 at his home.
Doug was born July 28, 1953 in Concord, NH, a son of David P. and Janet I. Ball Leland. He was a graduate of McLean, HS in McLean, VA (class of ’71) and of Virginia Technical Institute (class of ’75) with a degree in Architecture. While in college, he met Karen Eileen Heckert from Herndon, PA. They were married in Dalmatia, PA on September 15, 1974.
When the Lelands moved to Maine in 1977, Doug joined his father and brother at Leland Woodcrafters. In 1980, he became a shoe salesman at L.L.Bean, Inc. Shortly thereafter, he transferred to what was then known as the Computer Services Department where he rose to the position of Senior IT Architect.
Doug was an active member of First Parish Church, Brunswick, where he had taught Sunday school and served on the Standing Committee. He was part of the Chamber Ringers, a family handbell quartet, which performed in regional, national, and international festivals, local events, and was a favorite in local nursing homes. He had also served as an EMT and tanker driver for the Harpswell Neck Fire Department for several years.
Throughout his life he especially enjoyed the outdoors. His passion was photography, and he was a member of the North American Nature Photography Association and the Friends of Acadia. When he wasn't kayaking, camping, and hiking with family and friends, he was nurturing his talents in stained glass and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife Karen, of Harpswell; a daughter Heidi Leland of Brunswick; his parents, David and Janet Leland of Harpswell; two brothers, Bruce Leland and his wife Rachel of Orr’s Island, Peter Leland and his wife Betsy of Orr’s Island; a sister Nancy Matthews and her husband David of Vermont; two nephews, Nathan Leland and his wife Jen of Massachusetts, David Jones of Vermont; two nieces, Kristen Jones of New Hampshire, Amanda Leland of Brunswick; a great-nephew, Spencer Leland and great-niece, Maggie Leland both of Massachusetts.
