Obituary:
Brunswick ME – Paul B. Johnson, 92, of Brunswick, formerly of College Point, N.Y, passed away on Sunday, April 11, 2010. He was born on February 18, 1918 in Niles, Ohio, the third child of Carl and Pearl Johnson. He attended grade school in Keyport, N.J. & graduated from high school in Zanesville, Ohio. He attended Muskingum College at New Concord, Ohio on an athletic scholarship where he met Grace Jones, his future wife. He was a natural athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball in high school & college. After leaving college he signed on to play semi-pro baseball in the Eastern Ohio League as a left handed pitcher. At the end of the season he was offered a try out with the Chicago Cubs but left the sport for a job in N.Y. He also enjoyed golf and was an avid tennis player. As a member of the Ariel Rowing Club in College Point, he rowed around Manhattan Island on two occasions with his crew. He was into fitness before it became fashionable and for many years would walk 2-3 miles every day for exercise. In N.Y. he worked at EDO Corporation in College Point as a foreman for the manufacture of Navy sea planes. He served in the Army during WWII. In 1953 he went to work for Davis Aircraft Products Co. as a Designer and Sales Engineer. He retired from there in 2000 at the age of 80 after 47 years. He was an active member of the First Reformed Church of College Point, N.Y. from 1947 to 2008. He served many years as a deacon and elder, treasurer and head usher. He was active in the Men’s club, and the Chapel Players theatrical group, both on stage and behind the scenes. He was a co-leader of the Emanon Youth Group, and a member of various church committees. He was also active in the Masons and in 1967 he served as Master of the Anchor-Astoria Masonic Lodge No. 729 in College Point, NY. He and his wife Grace enjoyed several trips throughout Europe, eventually taking each of their grandchildren along on one of their trips. At the end of 2008 he moved to Brunswick to be near his daughter Judy and resided at The Stevens Home. Preceding him in death was his brother Richard, sister Mary Jane Zellar, and his beloved wife of 59 years, Grace Emily Jones Johnson. He is survived by his two daughters: Judith Johnson Klein & her husband Keith, of Brunswick, and Susan Johnson Lefever Cote of Oklahoma City, OK; 6 grand children and 7 great-grand children. He is also survived by his younger brother Stanley R. Johnson of Zanesville, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. He will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his wonderful sense of humor, his easy going nature, his gentlemanly manners, his spirit of adventure and his generous heart.
