- Irene Edna Alden, 94, of Gleed Drive in Brunswick, died March 30, 2010, at Hospice in Brunswick, Maine.
She was born in Leeds, Maine, on January 19, 1916, the daughter of John Alden and Charlotte Baker Alden. She graduated with Honors from Monmouth Academy in 1933, and Farmington Normal School in 1935. She taught at the Brick School in Leeds from 1935 to 1942.
She was a direct descendant of John and Priscilla Mullins Alden, who came to America on the Mayflower in 1620.
Irene married Gordon L. Alden in Lewiston on June 16, 1941. After residing in Portland and Bath, they moved to Sebasco in Phippsburg from 1945 to 1963. While living at Sebasco the Alden family attended the Small Point Baptist Church.
In 1963 they relocated to Beverly, MA. With Irene’s love of children and her gift of patience, she touched the lives of many while operating a preschool day care in her home for several years.
In 1977 Gordon & Irene retired to Sunset Gardens in Brunswick, ME. While in Brunswick, they attended the Main Street Baptist Church. Irene enjoyed gardening, crafts, music, visits from her grandchildren and especially her hobby of making unique patchwork quilts.
Her husband, her brothers John Alden Jr., Ralph Alden, and Ronald Alden, and her sister, Priscilla Rote, predeceased her.
She is survived by her sons, Glen Alden of Ormond Beach, FL, Leigh Alden of South Daytona, FL, Larry Alden and wife Suzette of Brentwood, TN, Raymond Alden of Brunswick, ME, her daughter, Jean Alden of Anchorage, AK, nine grandchildren, two great-grandsons, and several nieces and nephews.
At the request of Mrs. Alden, there will be a family memorial service at the Plains Cemetery in Leeds in place of a funeral.
