Arthur A. Monke, of Brunswick, died Wednesday, January 27 after a long illness. He was 84. He was born on March 30, 1925 in Regent, North Dakota where his father had homesteaded. The seventh child of Frank and Sophie Monke, he grew up in North Dakota and Minnesota. During World War II he served with the Army in the European Theater. After the war he attended Gustavus Adolphus College where he met his wife Jytte, who was an exchange student there. He received a Master of Library Science degree from Columbia University and was a reference librarian at Colgate University for several years. In 1963, he moved to Brunswick as Assistant Librarian at Bowdoin College, and later served as Librarian of the College until his retirement in 1992.
He arrived at the college when the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library was under construction and later oversaw the expansion of the library and the construction of the Hatch Science Library. His strong interest in computer science made him an early advocate for its application to libraries.
He was one of the founders of the Nathaniel Hawthorne Society and was its Treasurer for many years. He also served on a number of professional boards. Locally, he was active in the original expansion of the Curtis Memorial Library.
He was a lover of books and would recite literary passages, many of which he claimed his teacher made him memorize when he attended a one-room schoolhouse in North Dakota. He spent happy hours on Casco Bay where he learned to sail in spite of his family’s assistance.
He leaves his wife, Jytte, of 58 years, a daughter, Kirsten Monke, of Harpswell, two sisters, Edna Mittelsteadt, of Janesville, MN, Norma Pommeranz, of Faribault, MN, a brother, Leonard Monke, of Clitherall, MN, and two grandchildren. A son, Eric, and daughter, Ingrid predeceased him.
