Obituary:
Brunswick -- Warren R. Dwyer, 82, a longtime resident, died of natural causes January 16 surrounded by family. Friends and loved ones were touched, but not surprised, by the resplendent power of the will to survive they witnessed in his final days. The son of Edward and Ellen Dwyer, he was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, June 24, 1927. He graduated from Montclair (NJ) High School during WW II. Following a family tradition he then served in the U.S. Navy, aboard the troop ship USS General W.C. Langfitt in the Pacific theater. After college he received his naval officer commission. Mr. Dwyer graduated from the University of Michigan, earned his law degree at the University of Pennsylvania, and then practiced law in New York City with Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft. In 1957 he married Marilyn Habel, whom he had met on a trip to Stowe, VT -- one that would lead to 52 years of love and adventure. They moved to the Boston area in 1959, where Warren served as corporate counsel for Raytheon, and subsequently as Vice President of the international management consulting firm Harbridge House. Maine cast its spell during a one-year assignment to the Bath Iron Works and, together with business partner John Palmer, Mr. Dwyer purchased the Yarmouth-based firm Down East Novelties in 1972. As company president until his retirement in 1990, Mr. Dwyer helped grow a small local company into a firm with nationwide sales. But Mr. Dwyer’s enthusiasm for life was best reflected in his service to others, and in a love of adventure shared with family and friends. From his work with a New York City housing clinic, to service as a Selectman in Lincoln, Massachusetts, to his extensive community engagement in Brunswick, Mr. Dwyer lived his belief that one person can make a difference. In 2002, along with wife Marilyn, he was recognized with a Jefferson Award for a distinguished record of community involvement that included service as: President of the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust; Vice President of Mid Coast Hospital; Chair of the Bowdoin College Friends Fund; President of the Maine State Music Theater; Deacon at First Parish Church; and nine years on the Brunswick Planning Board, among numerous other commitments. Mr. Dwyer loved the outdoors, and never lost his sense of wonder for life. He hiked in the Arctic with his brother, Edward; traveled by icebreaker to the Antarctic with wife Marilyn; crewed on the Schooner Bowdoin from Labrador to Castine; and walked the walls of Samarkand. In later years he loved sharing his passions with his grandchildren. His family will remember him reaching across Casco Bay with a steady swell, 18 knots of wind and a smile on his face. He will be sorely missed by wife Marilyn, daughter Alison Dwyer, son-in-law Philip Freeman, grandson Connor Freeman, granddaughter Kenzie Freeman; son Stuart Dwyer, daughter-in-law Julie Dwyer, grandsons Evan and Cameron Dwyer; brother Edward Dwyer, sister-in-law Debby Dwyer; and nieces Cindy Visbaras, Julie Farnsworth and their families.
