John B. Long, 85, of Brunswick, Maine, died Nov. 24, 2009, at Bodwell Nursing and Rehabilitation in Brunswick. He was a retired finance executive and World War II veteran.
Born Nov. 19, 1924, in Corona, Calif., Mr. Long was a graduate of Riverside City College. He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Miller (DD 535) from 1943 until the end of World War II. He fought at Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and in many other battles. He then served in the US Occupation Forces in Japan.
After raising his family in California, Colorado, and Florida, he retired following a long career with Avco Financial Services. He had lived in Atlantic Beach, Fla., for 30 years before recently moving to Maine. He was especially fond of Bailey Island, where he purchased a home in 2005.
During the 1960s, Mr. Long was the treasurer and an elder of the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church of Thousand Oaks, Calif. He loved fishing and camping, he traveled the world, and he was an avid reader with a keen interest in history. And he was an accomplished worker with wood, from which he built fine toys, boxes, and furniture.
Mr. Long leaves his wife of 61 years, Barbara (Allan) Long; a son, John A. Long, of Hingham, Mass.; a daughter, Melinda DiSalvo, and husband Peter, of Roswell, Ga.; a grandson, Peter John DiSalvo; two sisters, Pat Anderson of California and Jeannie Mathews (and husband Chet) of Arizona; a nephew, Kenny Baumgartner of Arizona; and several cousins.
