Name: Eleanor Wood Geary Date: March 29th, 1920 - October 31st, 2009 Obituary: Eleanor Wood Geary, 89, died on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Thornton Hall in Brunswick, Maine. She was born March 29, 1920 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the daughter of Effie Hayes and Paul D. Wood. Her mother died in childbirth and Eleanor was raised by her paternal grandparents Dr. William R. Wood, DD and Minnie Dennis Wood. She graduated from Cony High School in Augusta in 1938 and received her bachelor’s degree in English from Bates College in 1942. She graduated from Boston University with a master’s degree in Education. “Teddy” married Edward J. Geary in 1944 who predeceased her in 1997. Mr. Geary became a distinguished educator whose teaching assignments brought the Geary’s to Orono, ME, New York City, Paris, France, Cambridge, MA and Ithaca, NY before moving to Brunswick, ME in 1965. Mrs. Geary taught school at the West Harpswell School for 15 years. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Laura Geary of Westford, MA, Mrs. Geary specifically requested that there not be a memorial service. A private committal is to be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Augusta, ME.
