William Russell Clemons, 92 BRUNSWICK -- William Russell Clemons, 92, of Brunswick, died Thursday evening at Bay Square in Yarmouth, where he had resided for the past five months. Born in Topsham on March 14, 1917, the son of Oscar William and Delia (Tripp) Clemons, he lived in Bartlett, N.H. as a young boy and moved to Topsham to reside with his aunt, Ruth Croston, after his parents unexpectedly died. He graduated from Brunswick High School in 1935 where he was a star member of the baseball and track teams. He graduated from Bridgton Academy in 1936, where he attended as a post-graduate prior to going to Columbia University. While at Bridgton he ran in Madison Square Garden with the track team. On Aug. 25, 1940, he married his high school sweetheart, Ada Yates, of Brunswick, at the First Parish Church. They recently celebrated their 69 wedding anniversary. Bill and Ada lived in Brunswick throughout their marriage and spent their summers at the family cottage on Stover's Point in South Harpswell. Bill was a foreman at the Todd-Bath Shipbuilding Company in South Portland from 1943-1947 and spent two years as the General Manager and yard superintendent of the General Shipbuilding Corporation in Baltimore, Md. Over the years Bill was the owner of several Brunswick businesses including the Brunswick Seafood Market, the New England Re-Upholstering Company and the Brunswick Pawn Shop. In 1958, he opened the Clemons Real Estate Agency and operated the firm for the next 25 years. He was also a firefighter for the Crash & Rescue Fire Department at the Brunswick Naval Air Station for 20 years. Bill enjoyed life to its fullest. He loved fishing (especially on the Miramichi River in Canada), playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, watching the Red Sox and Patriots, or reading a good book. He was outgoing, loved being around family and friends, and could always be counted on to entertain with his great stories. He also loved horses and harness racing, owning several trotter and pacer race horses over the years. The William Russell Clemons horses loved him and anxiously waited for his visits with carrots, apples, and kind words of encouragement, whether they were training at the Topsham Fair Grounds or a race day at Scarborough Downs. Bill also loved candlepin bowling and was recognized for his 45 years of consecutive league play at the Knights of Columbus. As an active member of the community, he served as President of the following organizations: The Brunswick Rotary Club; the Merrymeeting Sportsman's Association; The Coffin School PTA; The First Parish Church Men's Club; and the Androscoggin Valley Board of Realtors. He was also cofounder and president of the Merrymeeting Board of Realtors and Founder of the Merrymeeting Multiple List Service. He was a member of the local advisory board of Gardiner Savings Bank. He was also a proud member of the Blue Lodge and Yates Lodge of Perfection, a 32rd degree mason and a member of the Merrymeeting Shrine Club and Kora Temple Shrine. He was predeceased by brothers Raymond, Robert, John, Leroy and David (Higgins). His surviving relatives include his wife Ada of Brunswick; his sister Ruth (Murphy) of Belfast, his brother George Croston of Brunswick; and his brother-in-law Stanley Yates of Brunswick. He is also survived by his three children, Anne Jones (Lloyd), William T. Clemons (Wanda), and James Clemons (Kathy), all of Harpswell. Bill has seven grandchildren, Tom Clemons, Wayne Clemons, Jason Clemons, Matthew Clemons, Sean Clemons, Lynne Caljouw and Leesa Jones; five great-grandchildren, Hannah, Amanda, Ryan, Andrew and Jonathan; and many nieces and nephews.
