Alice H. Morton passed away on October 16, 2009. She was born September 13, 1912 in Washington Township, Guernsey County, Ohio daughter of Enos and Columbia Corley Hayhurst. She resided with her
husband, Paul W. Morton in Freeport, Ohio until March 1997 when they went to Maine to reside near their daughter and family. They were married
August 25, 1932 and his death occurred on February 25, 2000 after
sixty-seven years of life together.
Alice graduated from Madison High School in 1931. Her work career was
35 years as an insurance agent for Grange Mutual Casualty Company and
assisting her husband in tax work.
During World War II she was in charge of the Ground Observer Corps of
the U.S. Air Force for the Freeport area.
She also supervised and made the report of Harrison County for the
First Governor’s Conference on aging in Ohio under Governor Michael V.
Disalle, that was held at the request of President Dwight Eisenhower.
She served on the Harrison County Home Health Board of Advisors for
many years.
She loved history and did much to preserve it locally, publishing

She was a charter member of the Harrison County Historical and
Genealogical Societies and a life member of each. She was a life
member of the Ohio Genealogical Society and of the Belmont County and
Guernsey County societies.
She belonged to the Freeport United Methodist Church for over 75 years
and was a charter member of its Woman’s Society of Christian Service
where she served in various offices including president. She was
always active in Sunday School work serving wherever needed.
With her husband, Paul, being a rural letter carrier, she became
active in the Auxiliary to the Rural Letter Carriers Association
serving in the county, district, and became state president over state
conventions at Akron and Columbus and served as a delegate to several
National conventions.
She was the first Cub Scout mother in Freeport, assisting in
organizing the local group and with her husband supported the Scouting
programs of the area including serving banquet meals to area Scout
officials on the land ship, S. S. Hanna at Piedmont.
She was the 4-H advisor of the Freeport Dinner Belles 4-H Club.
She joined Freeport Chapter #319, Order of the Eastern Star in 1949
and served as secretary for 26 years. After going to Maine she became
active in Electa Chapter #2 in Bowdoinham and was made a life member.
She was a member and officer of Freeport Grange #2337 for over fifty
years and became active in Sagadahoc Grange in Bowdoin and then a
member in the Topsham Grange. She was a member of Guernsey County
Pomona Grange, the Ohio State Grange, and the National Grange.
She was a member of the Moravian Trail Chapter of the Daughters of the
American Revolution and in Maine attended the meetings of Burnt Meadow
Chapter.
Alice was active in the I Help you Club at Freeport and had been made
a life member of the Lakeland Democratic Woman’s Club of Freeport. She
served as presiding judge at elections in Freeport for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers:
Lester A., J, Wilson. and Perry O. Hayhurst and an infant sister.
She leaves two children: a son, Dr. Paul S. Morton and wife, Jane of
Columbus, Ohio and daughter, Corley Anne Byras of Bowdoin, Maine.
Also six grandchildren: Dr. David P. Morton, Austin, TX, Sarah Jane
Morton, Columbus, OH,
George S. Byras, II, Bowdoin, ME, Mrs. Christopher (Stephanie) Turgeon
of Augusta, ME, Grant S. Byras, Holden, ME and Mrs. Robert (Treon)
Byras, South Boston, MA.
Two great granddaughters, Elise S. Morton, Orlando, FL and Mallory
Turgeon, Augusta, ME.
Services at the Freeport Methodist Church, Freeport, OH, will be held on Saturday, October 24, at 2 pm with calling hours from 1 pm to 2 pm.
Burial will follow immediately in the family plot at Greenmont Union Cemetery.
