Obituary:
Harpswell— Carrie (Graves) Metcalfe, a formerly of Topsham, died Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at her home. She was born in Topsham, April 16, 1907 a daughter of William Winthrop and Lida Staples Graves. She attended local schools and graduated from Brunswick High School in 1924. In 1925 she married Marshall H. Metcalfe. They owned and operated a Community Store on Pleasant Street and later established a mobile home park which she continued to operate after Mr. Metcalfe died in 1982. For several years she was employed at Senters Department Store and the Pejepscot Paper Company. She was a longtime communicate of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Lisbon Falls. She was an active member of the Merrymeeting Group of Topsham. She was a direct descendant of Topsham’s first settlers and she was a member of the Maine Society of Mayflower Descendents. During WWII she was an American Red Cross volunteer. Among her many interests were family, friends, and music. She will be especially remembered for her compassion and generosity. She was predeceased by her husband, and a sister, Beatrice Graves Adams. She is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline M. Mitchell Tuttle and her husband Philip of Harpswell; nine grandchildren, P. Brooks Tuttle of Topsham, Hilary Innis and her husband Michael of Harpswell, Scott M. Mitchell of Bowdoin Center, Mark W. Mitchell of Durham, Stewart M. Tuttle of Harpswell, Christine Newman and her husband Robert of Telluride, CO, Susan Watson and her husband Gary of Flagler Beach, FL, S. Stevens Gowdy and her husband James of Cortez, CO, Leslie Rowson of Roswell, GA; five great-grandchildren
