Topsham— Herman Leroy “Bud” Schafer, Jr., age 92, died at his residence in the Highlands Saturday, August 1, 2009 with his family at his side.
He was born December 22, 1916 in Ocean Grove, NJ the son of Herman Leroy and Helen Weller Schafer. He was a graduate of Manasquan High School, NJ and the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis MD class of 1940. He married Ruth Christine Masker on September 11, 1948.
Mr. Schafer served in the US Navy during WWII. He was a survivor of the attack upon Pearl Harbor and was stationed aboard the USS Arizona at the time of the attack. He served for the majority of the war on the USS Alabama and towards the end of the war was transferred to the USS Iowa, ultimately attaining the rank of Lt. Commander.
He lived most of his life in Brielle, NJ. He owned Manasquan Lumber Company and Schafer Fuel Oil in Manasquan NJ and served on the Board of Directors for Manasquan Savings & Loan for over fifty years. He was a member of the Navy League and is a past president of that organization. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club, the NJ Lumberman’s Association and the NJ Fuel Merchants Association. He enjoyed golf, dancing, and especially his wife’s cooking.
He is predeceased by a son, Douglas Leroy Schafer.
He is survived by his wife Ruth Schafer of Brunswick; a son, Dr. Scott Schafer and his wife Susan of Brunswick; three grandsons, Garrett D. Schafer of Manasquan, NJ, Colin D. Schafer of Brunswick, Dillon A. Schafer of Brunswick.
