Bowdoin Roy Charles Fraser, Bowdoins oldest citizen, age 96, died at his home Tuesday, June 2, 2009.
He was born November 14, 1912 in Oakfield, ME a son of Charles W. and Theresa Parker Fraser. He attended schools in Oakfield, West Gardiner, and Washington, ME. He married Dorothy Shepard, the mother of his children, in 1931. She died of tuberculosis in 1937.
He worked as a shoe cutter for several companies, beginning at RP Hazzard Shoe Co., Gardiner. He worked for many years at Bath Iron Works, and also had his own farm in Bowdoin where he raised and dealt cattle and traded horses. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially while hunting and fishing.
Mr. Fraser was a member and deacon of the Brunswick Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Brunswick, as well as a volunteer at the Adventist Community Services Center, Brunswick.
He is predeceased by a daughter, Erma Downs; a sister Mary Emery Gardiner; a brother, Arthur Fraser Gardiner.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte (Moore) Fraser of Bowdoin; daughters, Beryl Karkos and husband George of Lisbon, Barbara Bryant and husband Herb of Lisbon Falls; sister-in-law Dorothy Fraser Gardiner; a very devoted nephew, Linwood Fraser and wife Joyce Randolph; nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren; four step- children, George Fernald and wife Isabell of Waldoboro, Mary Speicher and husband Hal of Robesonia, PA, David Fernald and wife Patty of Fort Kent, Joanna Fernald and Fiancé Steven Perkins of Topsham; six step-grandchildren.
