Orr’s Island—Kenneth C. Cary, age 84, died at home on Friday May 22, 2009.
He was born to William and Helen Cary on February 27, 1925 in Newark, New Jersey. After serving in the United States Army, Mr. Cary married Susan Crombie. The Carys moved to Orr’s Island in 1948 and co founded Camp Rutledge, a summer camp for boys. They moved to New Jersey in the early fifties and opened a restaurant in Fairfield, New Jersey which he and his brother Don Cary operated until 1984, when he retired and returned to Maine.
Mr. Cary maintained lifelong interests in botany and zoology, and was an avid fisherman and woodworker. He was educated at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey and Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.
He was predeceased by his wife Susan Cary and daughter Carolyn Haskell, of Turner, Maine.
He is survived by son Bob and his wife Lois of Orr’s Island, daughter Cynthia Hammond of Auburn, Maine, son Kenneth Cary of Flemington, New Jersey, and son-in-law Richard Haskell of Farmington, Maine. Mr. Cary had eight grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial waterfront ceremony and reception for Mr. Cary and his late wife Susan will be held at the family home on Orr’s Island on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 3:00 p.m.
