Carolyn Laura Browne Bolles, 84, of Great Island, died Sunday, May 17th, following a long illness. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 26, 1924, she was the daughter of Arthur S. and Marjorie Chalmers Browne. She grew up in Belmont, Massachusetts and graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine in 1948. In 1959 she married Robert C. Bolles in Belmont, Massachusetts. Within two years of their marriage, they moved to Wilton, Connecticut, where they raised their family until moving to Maine in 1977. During World War II, she worked part time at Massachusetts General Hospital to help alleviate staffing shortages the hospital was experiencing due to the war. After graduating from Colby, she began a nine year period of working with the Harvard Coop, eventually serving as Assistant Book Manager. Later in life, Mrs. Bolles ran a bed and breakfast for several years. Her affiliations over the years included the League of Women Voters, the Wilton Women’s Club, the Wilton Glee Club, Wilton Tennis Association, Harpswell Garden Club, Casco Bay Council Navy League, Wilton Congregational Church and the First Parish Church, where she served in many capacities. Mrs. Bolles was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who was known at home and in the community as a woman who brought joy to the lives of all who knew her. She was predeceased by a son, David, in 1995 and her husband Robert in 1997. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 30th at 11:00 a.m. at the First Parish Church in Brunswick.
