Joseph A. Fortin of Brunswick Maine passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the Bodwell House in Brunswick. Mr. Fortin was born in Brunswick, the son of Joseph R. Fortin and Alice Menard. He attended St. John’s School until he left to help support his siblings. Mr. Fortin served in the U.S. Navy for a brief period during World War II and was given a medical discharge. He worked at the Bath Iron Works for a number of years as a pipefitter and retired from the Maintenance Department at the Brunswick Naval Air Station in 1976. Mr. Fortin also repaired watches and clocks from his home on Union Street. He was an avid Bowdoin College hockey fan who attended all of the home games for almost 30 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Amvets.
Mr. Fortin was married to the former Marguerite M. Masse on July 1, 1940 at St. John’s Church in Brunswick. She passed away on May 11, 1983. In addition to his wife, Mr. Fortin was predeceased by six sisters, Marie Anne Ouellette, Sr Therese Fortin, Geraldine Masse, Emillienne Lavigne; Gabrielle Fortin, and Justine Fortin, and one brother, Francois Fortin. He is survived by three daughters, Monique Potee and her fiancée, Leo Bouchard of Brunswick; Lucille Jeffery and her husband Paul of Topsham; and Pauline Gallagher and her husband John of Bath; as well as two grandsons, Leon L Potee III and his wife Mary of Houston, Texas; and John J Gallagher and his wife Catherine of Brunswick; and one great-grandchild, Noelle Potee of Houston; three sisters, Gemma Seyfried of New Hyde Part, New York, Rita Fortin of Brunswick, and Flavia Dudley and her husband Thomas Dudley of Brunswick; and one brother, Chanel Fortin of Brunswick, as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8p.m. Friday, May 1, at the Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Church, Pleasant Street, Brunswick. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made in his memory to the Peoples Plus Center of Brunswick, 6 Noble Street, Brunswick, ME 04011, or to the American Cancer Society, One Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.
